Many years ago I asked God to cause things to happen to me that I could use as sermon illustrations. There have been times that I regretted that prayer--from the time I caught on fire while making a cup of tea (I wasn't injured), to where I have hung for a second by my wedding ring from the top rung of a ladder. These weren't too much fun at the time, but they made great sermon illustrations.

After Kirk got some chickens, I was flooded with joy-filled memories of collecting fresh eggs back in New Zealand, before we moved to the States. After some reasoning with my loving wife, we now have five chickens. I love them, and I've even give them their own names: Crispy, Tender, Finger-licking, Original and Roast.

You are standing in a supermarket line. You have a tract ready for the lady at the checkout. You've given out tracts at checkouts before. You have it down. You simply say, "I have something for you that you may like to read when you have a minute." Then you check out. You get away fast. You have learned to conquer your fears.

Two of the strongest exhortations to the importance of having good doctrine, are sandwiched into some of Scripture's richest references to evangelism. In 2 Timothy 4:2-5 Paul reminds Timothy to "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season." He says to "reprove, rebuke, exhort" and then he adds "with all longsuffering and doctrine . . ."

I rushed down the stairs to the sound of a barking dog and our doorbell. When I opened it, two well-dressed young men stood in front of me. I greeted them with a warm, "Hi," to which one of them asked in perfect English, "Do you know of any Spanish speaking families around here?"

Come back with me to the year 51AD. Look on, as another Christian is about to be thrown to the lions. This man has one last chance to publicly deny his faith in Jesus Christ, but he doesn't. The awaiting crowd roars with delight. Once again, the grizzly sight of blood and bone will be spread across the blood-soaked soil of the arena.

It's taken a while, but the world is finally getting the message. After decades of hearing that all God wants is to be allowed to improve their lives with a wonderful plan, they are now getting the second part of the message from the seeker-friendly church. What is it? It is that we should eliminate anything that would make seekers feel uncomfortable.
