Kirk's Spurgeon Moment 8/3/09

Written by Kirk Cameron Tuesday, 04 August 2009
Spurgeon_thumb.jpg  "I am sure our Lord Jesus Christ does not want His ministers to deliver magnificent orations, spread-eagle sermons, with long and elaborate sentences in them. He wants them to just come and talk as He talked, in all simplicity, so that the very poorest and most illiterate of their hearers may understand their meaning, embrace the Truths of God they proclaim and find everlasting life in Him of whom they speak."

~ Charles Spurgeon

KirkCameron.jpg "The Pharisees loved the sound of their own voices, and many of today's preachers enjoy the admiration of their fellow seminarians and astute theological contemporaries, not realizing the ineffectiveness of their techniques. In an effort to impress their hearers with eloquence, their words often miss the mark completely, flying right over the heads of those who are most eager to learn from them. We must remember that it is not the wise, the mighty, and the noble that God has called, but rather the foolish, weak, and the base, so "that no flesh should glory in His presence." So if you feel called to speak the oracles of God to men with a view to leading them to salvation, then do what Jesus did. Speak the truth in love, and keep it simple (1 Corinthians 2:1-5)

    Hi Amy,

I am hopeful that I can clear up what you wrote regarding Spurgeon\'s statement that Calvinism is the Gospel. First, I think that a bit of caution should be used in hurling around an indictment of blasphemy especially given Spurgeon\'s commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ and the many souls that were saved under his preaching ministry.

Second, many of Spurgeon\'s detractors will pull things out of context. Was Spurgeon a \"Calvinist\"? Yes. He believed in the doctrines of Grace. Was he saying that Calvin\'s doctrines are the same as the gospel? No. He defended the theological system that is known as Calvinism because he found it to be the most biblical representation of the gospel. See this link for his Defense of Calvinism: www.spurgeon.org/calvinis.htm

    Eloquent?...Yes.
    Biblical accuracy?....Yes.
    Most published author to date?....Yes.
    Blasphemer?....????????????
Have you read the story of how Spurgeon loved his cigars and would joke of how his fellow smokers should feel guilty for smoking and then would laugh as he lit his cigar. He wrote and printed that calvanism is the gospel. Is this not blasphemy? Confused and would love any Godly direction based on the bible that anyone could share. I love this series but was surprised to see Kirk\'s love to quote CHSpurgeon.

Frank Viola would agree with Kirk Cameron on this one. Read Viola\'s outstanding Reimagining Church. Surely the death of institutional church is necessary for God to raise up organic church and bring back the power of the Spirit that released God\'s ultimate passion during the Acts of the Apostles. To God alone be the glory. Nothing matters but God.

I have been saying this for years. The truth and simplicity of the Word is being covered by self promotion and being politically correct. I have been and am still searching for that Man of God who will stand up, be as BOLD as Paul and just speak it plainly and truthfully. It is not hard to understand...we just seem to complicate the message. I pray daily for the next true revival to break out and I believe that will only happen when someone stands up and says this is it, plain and simple!

It\'s amazing that this came from a man of over 25000 words in his vocabulary. I only have like 4. I use gutteral sounds to get my points across. Haha. Anyway.... Spurgeon is a man who had a great vocab, yet he knew that it was by the simplicity of the gospel that men and women get saved.

Wow. God has spoken to me directly through this blog. I read those same verses (1 Corinthians 2:1-5) yesterday, and I was reminded of the fact that it is by the Holy Spirit\'s power that the scales of the sinner fall off his eyes and God\'s truth is revealed to him...his sorrow for sinning against a holy, righteous, and just God does not result upon man\'s wisdom and eloquence of speech, but upon the Spirit, who works on their hearts.
